On Saturday, August 30, I went to Podstrana, a small town outside Split in Croatia. It was finally time for Goalwin's long awaited tournament week, the Croatian Poker Series (CPS).
I was a little sad to leave my three-week-old daughter and my wonderful wife though. No, not a little sad, I actually felt really bad about it, and I was not so far away from dropping out even though everything was already paid.
I was playing the same tournament week last year and have great memories from that trip though, so even if I had some concerns with leaving home, I knew that the journey would be nice, especially since I was travelling with friends in the Goalwin team, such as Johnny Dollar, Jerry Fagerdahl and Viktor Morgårds etc. I really looked forward to the combination of sun, food and poker.
During this trip, I shared rooms with Albert Rolander and Johnny Dollar. Since the poker was starting late each day with the tournament starting at nine in the evening and the cash games didn't get going until even later, there was a lot of "free time". This free time was really no a problem to spend in a location like this.
I don't think I had a bad meal throughout the whole trip. Especially, they were good at fish and shellfish in Croatia, even if other meat also was good quality. If you come here, I can recommend a restaurant called Central which is located in the center of Split. Me and Johnny Dollar discovered this restaurant on Sunday and then took several visits. The fish they served was awesome!
At the promenade outside the hotel there was also a good restaurant (sorry, forgot the name) that I have to recommend for their seafood and the great ocean view.
In addition to eating and drinking I did spend some time at the hotel pool, which was fantastic, and of course the Goalwin team went in to Split (when we bust out of the tournament) several nights to explore the nightlife. It really does not matter what day you're going out, it was full of people regardless, and very nice atmosphere. I can particularly recommend Hemingway and the Tropic Club.
